The former treasurer of a fire company in Snyder County is accused of stealing from the fire company and using the money for himself.
Robert Hassinger of Port Trevorton is the former treasurer of the Port Trevorton Fire Company. He is charged with forgery and theft. Police said he admitted to stealing more than $5,000 from the fire company where he worked.
John Hoover lives in the area and is a member of the fire department.
"I'm just glad they are doing something about it. They are pursuing it and not just slapping him on the hand and let him pay it back," said Hoover.
According to court paperwork, Hassinger was the treasurer for about five years and he used his position to get access to the fire company's bank accounts for his own personal use.
Police said Hassinger withdrew the money over the past year to pay for phone and TV bills. People in area think this could have a negative effect on the fire company.
"In due time, hopefully, things would get better and the community will come back and support the fire company," said one resident.
"Probably but in the same token I think they'll gain from it because he won't be there no more so they won't have to worry about money being stolen," said Douglas Reinard.
Police in Snyder County said Hassinger admitted to stealing the money and forging the fire chief's signature on a check. He is expected back in court later this month.
